Please remember that our pilots are volunteers who generously donate their time. While we understand the need for quick response time in some situations, please try to file your flight request at least two weeks in advance of the day you would like to fly. Thanks!

What Your Organization Can Do With SouthWings

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SouthWings?
SouthWings is a grant and donation based, environmental,
public-benefit aviation non-profit located in
Asheville, NC. We offer skilled volunteer pilots and
aerial education to enhance conservation in the Southeast.
We have flown more than 600 organizations in
AL, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, VA, and
WV, at no cost to the organization, to educate about
environmental issues.

Who goes on a SouthWings flight?

We fly people who have the will and means to share
what they learn from a flight with others including
private citizens, community leaders, government
officials, policymaker, authors, journalists,
documentarians, media, environmental organizations,
foundations, donors, and educational institutions.

What types of aircraft are used?
The majority of aircraft in SouthWings volunteer pilot
network are Cessnas and they can carry up to three
passengers. There is a listing of the pilots and their
aircrafts on our website at www.southwings.org.

What is my liability and who pays
for the flight?

SouthWings flights have the same status as any flight
made with passengers by a private pilot under Part
91 of the FAA Regulations. SouthWings pilots use
their personal aircrafts and donate the cost of the
flight, fuel, time, maintenance, etc. Because of the
generosity of our pilots, we can offer flights at no
charge.

What about insurance?

All SouthWings pilots carry liability insurance on their
aircrafts. SouthWings require a signed waiver of
liability from all passengers. The waiver releases the
pilot and others from liability, similar to what you
would sign if you participated in an adventure sport.

How do I request and prepare for a
flight?

The process begins with a flight request form located
on our website, www.southwings.org, or contact our
office at 800-640-1131. Preparation for the flight
includes identifying the objectives for the flight,
detailing a flight route, and completing the paperwork.
We require a waiver and a flight credit form to be
completed prior to the flight. After the flight, the
passenger report is completed. We ask that passengers
share photos or video they take from the flight.
