Hume Davenport

Hume Davenport was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Richmond, Virginia, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1983. He continued his educational pursuits by earning a Masters of Science degree in Environmental Studies with a major in administration from Antioch University in 1995. From 1988 to 1993, and then again in 1995, Mr. Davenport worked as a professional pilot, first as a flight instructor in Boulder, Colorado, and then as a back country pilot in Moab, Utah.
Mr. Davenport began his work as an environmental aviator while living in Colorado by volunteering his flying skills to help fight for the protection of the West's natural environment. His early efforts included conducting fly-overs to survey riparian areas in Colorado, transporting media representatives to view logging scars in Idaho, and tracking wolves in Montana. A 6,000-hour commercial pilot, Mr. Davenport was recognized in 1994 as “Conservation Pilot of the Year" by LightHawk, a non-profit organization providing aviation services to environmental organizations in the Western United States. This achievement was the culmination of Mr. Davenport's eight years of dedicated piloting with LightHawk.
In late 1996, Mr. Davenport envisioned an affordable, dedicated conservation flight organization that would focus on the Southeast and began SouthWings to fulfill this mission. SouthWings now has an 11 state service area that extends throughout the Southeast from the West Virginia mountains to Northern Florida and west to the cypress swamps of southern Louisiana.
