2015 Volunteer Pilot Annual Fly-In

Each year SouthWings hosts a fly-in to celebrate and honor our group of dedicated volunteer pilots.
September 2, 2015

SouthWings volunteer pilots and friends,

We are happy to share the details and information with you about our upcoming annual Fly-In on October 24, 2015 at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport (NEW).  We hope you can join us for what is sure to be a great day in the Big Easy!
Landmark Aviation at Lakefront Airport will be hosting our gathering in a large, private room in the FBO terminal building that’s perfect for our needs.  They’ve also committed to giving SouthWings pilots $ 0.25 off each gallon of AvGas purchased!  If you are planning to fly into Lakefront to attend our gathering, we will need to know your aircraft tail number so that Landmark will park all of our attendees’ aircraft in the same spot.
Our guest presenter this year is Jonathan Henderson.  Jonathan is the Coastal Resiliency Organizer for Gulf Restoration Network (GRN). Currently, he is managing GRN’s BP drilling disaster field monitoring operations in the Gulf of Mexico and is the GRN liaison with the Gulf Monitoring Consortium. Jonathan advocates for better stormwater management with the Flood Less New Orleans campaign. He received a bachelor’s degree in Theater from LSU, a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Louisiana, and a law degree from Southern University Law Center. Jonathan has worked in government relations for many years including as a legislative assistant at the Louisiana State Legislature and as Director of Governmental Relations for the Brylski Company, a full-scale public relations firm.  SouthWings is proud to have worked with him and flown him many times in recent years and we’re honored to have him attend our Fly-In and speak to our group!
In addition to the presentation from Jonathan, SouthWings staff will also provide an update on our current work, host a pilot discussion of pressing topics and present our volunteer pilots with a Patagonia gear giveaway!

After a catered lunch, SouthWings will be pleased to offer our Fly-In attendees complimentary tickets to theCommemorative Air Force’s (CAF) Air Power Expo, which will be coinciding with our event at Lakefront Airport.  This will be a great opportunity to check out a fleet of vintage, restored WWII-era fighters and bombers.  The CAF will also be providing rides (at an additional cost) to folks that wish to schedule that in advance.  Visit the CAF website if that’s something you’d like to arrange!
Our Fly-In will officially conclude by 6PM on Saturday, but you are all welcome and encouraged to stay longer to experience more of New Orleans.  Landmark Aviation staff can assist with hotel accommodations if needed as well as provide rental car arrangements if you’d like.
As an added treat, our friend and ally, Dean Wilson (Atchafalaya Basinkeeper) has generously offered to provide free, guided swamp tours (see photo below) via canoes and kayaks to our group on either Friday, October 23 or Sunday, October 25 for guests that would like to arrive a day early or stay a day later.  If this is of interest to you, we will need to have a headcount solidified as soon as possible so that Dean can make plans.  Let us know quickly as these spots are sure to fill up!
WE NEED TO KNOW IF YOU’RE COMING!  Please let us know by responding to this email, or by simply emailing our Flight Coordinator, David Moore, directly at:
Our catering and CAF ticket orders will be headcount-dependent, so please let us know as soon as you can if you’re coming – the sooner the better!  We’re setting a headcount deadline of Friday, September 11 so please respond prior to then.  Thanks in advance!
Reminder:  SouthWings will also have a presence (static aircraft display and staff on-site) at the final AOPA 2015 fly-in on October 10 in Tullahoma, TN.  If any of you are planning to come to this event, please let us know in advance, and come stop by our booth to say hello once you’re there!
Please make your plans now to come to our Gulf Fly-In in New Orleans on October 24!
Until then, as our Safety Adviser, Larry Peterson, says – Tailwinds and Smooth Landings!
Hume, Dave, Meredith, Courtney, Sara
