To date, the Atlantic coast of the US has escaped the devastation wreaked upon the Gulf coast by the oil and gas industry. Recently, however, there have been several proposals to open up our Atlantic shores to exploration. If successful, these proposals will necessarily have negative effects. As a Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality employee noted in response to the Gulf Monitoring Consortium’s report on the effects of Hurricane Isaac: “When a large storm impacts the coast there is going to be damage regardless of regulation. There’s going to be stuff tossed everywhere.”
